Why a routine beats random applying
Sending the same CV to every advert you see feels productive, but it makes it hard to remember what you applied for and when to follow up. A weekly routine keeps your effort visible and your applications tailored.
A five-day structure
Adjust the days to your own schedule and data budget.
- Monday: collect adverts from trusted sources and save the closing dates.
- Tuesday and Wednesday: tailor your CV and cover letter for the two or three adverts that fit you best.
- Thursday: submit through each advert's stated channel and log the details.
- Friday: follow up on applications older than one to two weeks, where the advert allows it, and update your tracker.
Keep a record of every application
Write down the company or department, post title, reference number, closing date, how you applied and the date you sent it. When a recruiter calls weeks later, you will know exactly which role they mean.
Protect your energy
Rejections and silence are a normal part of searching. Set a realistic weekly target, such as three well-tailored applications, rather than measuring yourself only by replies.
