Applying for a government job: what to know about the Z83

A plain-language overview of preparing a South African public-service application with the official Z83 form. Always follow the advert.

Updated 8 October 2026

What the Z83 is

The Z83 is the official application form used for many South African public-service posts. Download it from an official government source each time you apply, so you use the version currently in use. SA CV Studio does not supply or alter the form.

Read the specific advert first

Each vacancy states its own requirements: the reference number, closing date, where to submit, and which supporting documents are needed and when. Some adverts ask only for a Z83 and CV at first and request certified documents later. The advert you are applying to is the final authority.

Common avoidable mistakes

  • Leaving the post reference number blank or copying it incorrectly
  • Not signing the form where a signature is required
  • Using an old version of the form
  • Missing the closing date or submitting to the wrong address or portal
  • Sending one generic CV that does not reflect the advert's duties

Your CV still matters

The Z83 captures required information, but your CV is where you show relevant experience. Match your CV to the duties and requirements listed in the advert, truthfully.
