How to write a cover letter for a South African job

A simple four-paragraph cover letter structure for South African job applications, with tips for tailoring it to each advert.

Updated 8 October 2026

Keep it to one page

A cover letter introduces your CV. Aim for four short paragraphs that a recruiter can read in under a minute.

A four-paragraph structure

  • Opening: the role you are applying for, the reference number and where you saw it.
  • Why you fit: two or three strengths that match the advert, with a short example.
  • Why this employer: one specific reason you want to work there.
  • Close: your availability, and thanks for their time.

Tailor it every time

Reuse your structure, but rewrite the 'why you fit' paragraph for each advert. Mention the duties and requirements the advert lists, truthfully.

Public-service posts

Many government adverts ask only for the Z83 and CV. Include a cover letter only if the advert asks for one or allows it.
