CV format for South Africa: what employers expect

The CV format South African employers expect: length, layout, personal details, file type and what to leave out.

Updated 8 October 2026

Length and layout

Two pages suits most applicants, one page for first jobs. Use clear headings, reverse-chronological experience, and enough white space to scan quickly.

Personal details

Name, phone, email and town are enough. A normal CV does not need your ID number, race, marital status, religion or a photo. Share sensitive details only if an official form asks for them.

File type and naming

Send a PDF unless the advert asks for Word. Name the file clearly, for example 'Thandi-Mokoena-CV.pdf'.

Curriculum vitae cover page?

A separate cover page is not needed for most applications. Put your name and contact details at the top of page one instead.
