How to complete the Z83 form: a step-by-step guide

How to fill in the new Z83 application form for South African government jobs, section by section, and the mistakes that get applications rejected.

Updated 8 October 2026

Before you start

Download the Z83 from an official government source every time you apply, so you use the current version. Then open the vacancy advert next to it. The advert, not this guide, decides what you must submit. SA CV Studio does not supply or alter the form.

Section A: the position

Copy the post title, reference number and department exactly as written in the advert. A wrong or missing reference number is one of the most common reasons an application cannot be matched to a post.

Personal and contact details

Fill in every field the form asks for, using the same name and contact details as on your CV. Make sure the phone number and email you give are ones you check daily, because shortlisting contact can be quick.

Questions about conduct and conflicts of interest

Answer every yes-or-no question. Leaving one blank can make the form incomplete. Answer honestly, because public-service applications can be verified.

Qualifications and experience

Some versions and adverts allow you to refer to your attached CV for details. Others expect the sections to be completed on the form itself. Follow the advert. Where you do complete them, keep entries consistent with your CV.

Sign, check and submit

  • Sign and date the form where a signature is required.
  • Check the closing date and time.
  • Submit only through the email, portal or address in the advert.
  • Attach supporting documents only as that advert instructs. Some ask for certified copies only after shortlisting.
  • Keep a copy of everything and note the date sent.
