CV format · Part of the R149 toolkit
The South African CV format for 2026.
Keep it simple: one column, clear headings, two pages, saved as PDF unless the advert asks for Word. Here is the section order that works for most SA jobs.
- Recommended section order
- Two pages for most applicants
- PDF unless the advert says otherwise
- Editable layouts in the toolkit

Section order
- Name and contact details
- Short profile (2 to 3 sentences)
- Work experience, most recent first
- Education and training
- Skills and languages
- References or 'available on request'
What to leave out
You do not need a photo, your full ID number, marital status or religion unless an advert specifically asks. Leave out salary history unless requested.
Common questions
How long should a CV be in South Africa?
Two pages suits most people. A first-job CV can be one page.
PDF or Word?
PDF keeps your layout fixed. Send Word only if the advert asks for it.
