UIF · Free South African guide
UIF explained for job seekers.
The Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) pays short-term benefits to workers who lose their jobs. Your employer must register you and deduct contributions.
- Who registers you
- Contributions
- Claiming when you lose your job
- Free job-search support via ESSA
Key points
- Employers register workers with UIF and pay 1% of your earnings plus 1% from the employer, up to a set earnings ceiling.
- If you lose your job, you can claim through the Department of Employment and Labour, online (uFiling) or at a labour centre.
- You'll usually need your ID, bank details and a UI-19 form from your employer.
- Registering on ESSA (essa.labour.gov.za) gives free access to job opportunities.
Use the official source
Always check the latest information directly on the Department of Employment and Labour (labour.gov.za). Rules, forms and dates change, and only the official site is final. SA CV Studio is independent and not linked to the Department of Employment and Labour.
Scam warning
Real employers and government departments never ask you to pay for a job, an interview, training or a 'registration fee' to be shortlisted. If someone asks for money or your banking PIN, walk away and report it.
